2004 Pataskala Power Show

The Pataskala Power Show is special.  Now in it's third year, it combines agricultural equipment with antique earthmoving equipment.  There were plenty of old bulldozers, graders, cable power shovels and crawler hoes on display and doing what they do.  Even a cable dragline was on site and working.  This is essentially one big sand pile for the old boys to play in.  We jumped into the box ourselves!

Joe got weary of standing around and was itching to do something with the W-9, and this old steel-wheeled pull-type grader was just the ticket.  We  did pretty good flattening out the areas where the bulldozers and scrapers had been playing.  We think some of the die-hard crawler guys were suprised at how well the W-9 handled the grader with its 10' moldboard although there was a sharp bark from its stack and a little wheel spin when the blade was set for an aggressive cut.  That grader is in very fine shape, and shaving a mouse's ear with it would be possible.  Fred and Sam are at the wheel of the 9 while Mike and Joe monitor the grader's blade depth.  We had a blast with this thing!

We were working in a relatively confined area, but the grader's bolster steering allowed for fairly sharp turns.  This is a road grader and wasn't meant for site work.  It still was a lot fun to mess with!  There are two large hand wheels that raise and lower the blade.  One good upward pull on the wheel would send it spinning lowering the blade a good 4" into the cut.

After the dirt playing was done, Mom hitched a ride back to the Club's baling area with Joe on the W-9.  Peter and Jake followed behind closely.

This is a standard scene at most of our tractor shows.  Brad Fraley's Oliver bale press gets a good work out as does most of the crew.  Brad is in the green shirt with Mike in the background doing his usual bale-tie gig.  George Pound (in the bibs) and "Bean" fork straw into the press.  Peter and Jake look on and will assist someday soon in doing this.  It appears Jake already has aspirations of helping as he is seen here with a pitchfork.  Mike's F-30 is in the background, and just to the right of Brad in the background is Kent Lees' cute Cletrac.

Brad gives Jake a toss into the straw pile.  Perhaps Brad had heard enough of Jake's comments, and this warranted some remedial action.  George gets a good laugh from it all while Mike looks amused, too.

The usual suspects: the standard baling and separating crew for 2004 poses for a group shot.  From left to right:  Mike, Fred, Joe. George Pound, Brad Fraley, Bob Parsons and "Bean".   We are not sure who tagged him with the Bean nickname, but it was done because of his resemblance to the British comedy actor, Rowan Atkinson, who starred in the comedy movie BEAN.  The kids on top of the bales  are Peter, Sam and Jake.
